“I thought the answer to weight loss was cardio, cardio, and more cardio.”
What made you start personal training at TPP?
I have suffered from back problems since the age of 11 and had 2 major surgeries at 16 to insert metal rods the entire length of my spine. After wearing a plastic corset for 5 years and then recovering from the operations, I shied away from exercise with the fear of hurting my back – little did I realise, the damage I was causing with being overweight. It got to the point that my doctor recommended I lose a few pounds, so I started my weight loss journey.
Up until I joined TPP, I thought the answer to weight loss was cardio, cardio, and more cardio, plus extreme fad diets. I was doing up to 6 spin sessions a week and seeing minimal results. I tried every diet going but none were sustainable. Both a colleague and a cousin had trained at TPP before and seen great results, so I thought it was time to put myself first and give it a go.
Can you describe how you were feeling physically and mentally before training?
I remember my first phonecall before joining and I was really ready to go for it. Then my first session came around and I was terrified. I was worried that I would need everything to be adapted for me and that I would just be a pain for the trainers. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with others in the sessions.
However, it was the best feeling to realise that this was a friendly community, who all do their best to welcome and motivate you. You’re not compared to anyone and there is no competition.
Physically, I knew I had work to do, but with the support from the trainers and other members, I finally realised it was possible.
What did you want to achieve
I wanted to lose weight and be more confident. Although I was outwardly confident, I would spend ages trying to find outfits to wear and often end up in tears hating how I looked. I had become good at putting on a brave face. My main goal was to become happy with what I saw in the mirror.
What results have you seen with Personal Training at TPP?
Where do I start?! I have lost over 40lbs and dropped from a size 14-16 to between a 6-8. But it’s more about what I have gained. I have gained masses of confidence and loads of friends, which has made me so much happier. I have been able to better manage my back pain – no more sciatica or debilitating backache. I still have the odd bad day but nowhere near as bad as in the past. I have also gained a huge amount of knowledge on food and nutrition. I am no longer on a diet – I just make healthy choices most of the time.
What has been your motivation throughout your journey?
The first few months were tough, I made slow progress and lost very little weight. My motivation was then helped so much by Chris – he kept me going and encouraged me all the time. He knew the results would show eventually and he told me to be patient. I then suddenly started seeing results and that was so motivating. The more I learnt about nutrition, the more I realised I was in control.
Patience is key – there is no quick fix, it’s about learning to change the way you workout and eat. I only lose 1/2 lb a week now, but looking back, I have lost a stone since February – every little loss adds up in the end.
How would you describe your training sessions, the technical quality, and the intensity?
As I had never done any PT before, I had nothing to gauge TPP against. I quickly realised how little I knew about effectively using weights to train. The trainers are all so knowledgeable and really do want to help you learn and succeed. The sessions are well structured so you get into the swing of things really quickly. The muscle soreness over the first couple of weeks are awful, but it does get better.
The best thing about the training programmes is that everything is adaptable – not only if you can’t do something, but also if you don’t like a particular exercise the coaches will happily come up with a substitute. If you’re having a bad day, or need to go a bit lighter, you can. There is no pressure to lift the heaviest weights, every time, just as long as you are trying your best on that day.
I’ve worked up to squatting my bodyweight and deadlifting 1.5 times my bodyweight. Chris constantly checks my form and tweaks me to get the best out of each exercise, every instruction is accompanied by an explanation which really helps to develop your understanding.
Is there anything you’d change if you could do it all over again?
I wish I had started years ago.
If I could start again I would take more progress pictures. I didn’t like doing it at the start so I didn’t, but now I would love to be able to see more stages of my progress. It took a long time for me to see any change and realise it’s not all about numbers on the scales, so more photos would definitely have helped.
Would you recommend TPP and why?
Of course I would recommend TPP. I have never been in any gym like this. The support is incredible from both the staff and other members.
I only intended to do a month to start with, then I pushed it to 3 months. 15 months later and I can’t imagine leaving.
