Having operated in the fitness industry for over 5 years, it is easy to forget there are still people that genuinely believe that whey protein powders and other over the counter supplements are “pretty much like steroids”.
If I’m honest, to those who aren’t in the know, I can see why.
Companies purposefully put huge, oversized bodybuilders on the packaging of these supplements in the hope that average Joe will pick up “Growth Matrix 2.0″ expecting similar results.
To any onlooker glancing at the packaging, they will put two and two together and come to the conclusion that; PROTEIN = STEROIDS.
What these companies fail to address are the other “supplements” (hint hint) that gave them veins to resemble a road map and biceps the size of bowling balls.
So what is Whey Protein?
Have you ever opened a tub of cottage cheese or yogurt and noticed that milky liquid on top?
Yep, that’s whey.
It’s actually a by-product of cheese production, a pretty natural process if you ask me, which was previously discarded until it was found that whey has a very high protein content with a fantastic bio-availability.
Whey protein products are simply whey that has been converted into a powdered form to help people supplement their diets with a cheap, high quality protein. As many are flavoured, they are also a great way to flavour food and reduce sweet cravings without all the sugar,
Diets with protein higher than the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) have been shown to have many beneficial effects such as increases in lean muscle, improvements in body composition, improved recovery and increased satiety.
Therefore, whey protein is a fantastic, cheap, convenient, “not steroids” way of increasing the amount of protein in your diet if you are lacking. I highly recommend it to men AND women who regularly perform any sort of resistance training and aren’t getting enough protein in their diet.
If anything, I feel sorry for those that do want to look like some of the guys on the labels………… because whey protein on it’s own, isn’t going to do that.
